Can Your Credit Card Work if Magnetic Stripe Is Ruined?

[12:00:00 AM Friday, April 4, 2008]

We all are familiar with that little magnetic stripe, sometimes called a magstripe, on the back of our credit cards. Its name is CVV1. This is the most important part of your plastic. Consisting of magnetized particles impregnated on a thin band, magnetic stripe enables merchants to get access to the account information and make a transaction. So, it is obvious that we need to keep this part of the card always protected to ensure no breach of security and make transactions possible. But what happens if magstripe gets ruined? Will your credit card still work?

The magnetic stripe on the back of your or credit card is the key to important information about your account. There are up to three tracks used for for storing data. They are known as tracks 1, 2, and 3. The tracks contain all necessary information to complete a transaction: the user's name, the number of the account, a country code, currency units, and an expiration date. Your credit card typically uses only tracks 1 and 2. The usage of track 3 is not standardized among credit companies; it can even not be physically present on the card.

The data on the tracks can be stored and accessed at anytime by those who know the code to get the information (often through a PIN). If someone unauthorized finds it out, some great damage can be done. Identity thieves or credit card skimmers can access your data and draw money from your account. That's why lenders offer many important safety features to prevent credit card frauds.

If the magnetic stripe on the back of your credit card becomes dirty, scratched or demagnetized, the plastic may not work properly. You should ask your bank to send you a new card. Credit card issuers know that accidents happen when it comes to their plastics, so they will change a damaged credit card.

If you cannot order a new plastic, or you have to wait some time before you receive it, then you can use the numbers on the front of your damaged credit card. All your information can still be accessed through these numbers. However, most retailers will see that the magstripe isn't working. So you will be asked to provide some additional information for verification purposes. This is done to protect your account from people who may have stolen your credit cards.

Magnetic stripe is the key to your finances, so it is important to keep it safe. Don't forget to cut up your old card when you get the new one! Even if it may seem that the stripe does not work any longer, some people can find a way to download all your important information. You do not want the magnetic stripe to fall into the wrong hands, right? So cut the plastic through the magstripe and through the numbers on the front. It will ensure credit card info protection from identity thieves who could steal your plastic from your house or find it in a trash bin.

Last year I washed my jeans with a plastic in the pocket. Fortunately, the magstripe was ok and I didn't have to ask for a new plastic!
