Rewards Credit Cards That Lower Your Grocery Bill

[12:00:00 AM Friday, January 18, 2008]

No one could refuse the opportunity to save on the amount of money spent on groceries! You eat, right? Since you can't avoid buying meals anyway, you can do it in a way that will allow you to cut down your weekly food expenses. Many credit cards include rewards programs which let you save on groceries.

It means that you will get cash back bonus or rewards points when you shop at grocery stores or retail companies. Many rewards credit cards can be used in any store while others require you to do your grocery shopping in a specific shop.

Getting into the habit of buying your groceries with a credit card will allow you to benefit from food prices. Some rewards programs let the cardholders save up to 10% in cash back on all grocery store purchases!

While you are not defaulting on your credit bills, this money will cut down the amount of your debt which you have actually to pay. Avoid making late payments - this can cause your reward points to be forfeited.

Some rewards programs score one or several points for every dollar you spend. Then the points can be redeemed for gift certificates, checks or merchandise. The rewards programs can be limited to grocery purchases only, while others score you points for any purchase. If you are going to use a rewards credit card for buying groceries only, you can find the suitable programs that provide the most points on grocery purchases and avoid the ones that give you a small amount of points on all purchases. Vice versa, if you suggest using your credit card for all purchases, search for a save on a groceries credit card which includes rewards program scoring points on groceries and other types of purchases too. Thus you will get as much benefit as you can out of the rewards program.

There's an important aspect of the point-earning program: if you get, for example, 5 points for every dollar you spent it does not necessarily mean that you will get 5 percent cash back. Those 5 points can turn to be less than 1 percent cash back, that's why find out the details of your rewards program before you apply for a credit card. One more thing to keep in mind: the points don't last forever. Your points might have an expiration date, so check how long your reward points will be valid. Also, ask your credit card issuer if there are any specials which might help you get those points faster.

Lowering your food bill, keep in mind to use the coupons which you can cut from the Sunday newspaper or download and print from a free coupon site. It's surprising how much you can save using them together with your cash back or points rewards! Another important thing to remember is to plan your meals before going into a store. If you stick to your list, it will help you cut down your spending up to 50 percent.

Credit cards that save on groceries may be in the form of cash back rewards or a point earning program. I use cash back and spend money on groceries again.
